Twelve Tips to Stay Fraud Aware This Festive Season
We are seeing increasing attempts at fraudulent access and activity, fraudsters dishonestly trying to access bank accounts via cyberattacks and scams. As these attacks change rapidly, especially during the festive season, we encourage our members to educate themselves and protect themselves and their accounts from these unscrupulous people who are, unfortunately, looking for a vulnerable link to deceive, manipulate, and embezzle money.
Here are 12 essential tips to help you stay safe:
- Never EVER click on unsolicited links in texts or emails.
- Avoid public Wi-Fi for online purchases; use a secure connection.
- Keep your computer’s security up to date with reliable antivirus and browser software.
- Shop directly from trusted retailers’ websites.
- Be cautious of unbelievable deals or miracle products.
- Use reputable payment suppliers or Verified by VISA/Mastercard Secure Code.
- Watch out for fake calls from your bank or utility companies.
- Purchase tickets from secure and reputable websites.
- Limit personal information sharing on social media.
- Avoid saving passwords on your mobile device unless necessary, and protect your phone with a passcode.
- Your bank will never ask for your full PIN or online banking passwords. If in doubt, call your bank using the number on your card.
- Report any suspected fraud to your bank immediately.
What to do if you receive a suspicious text message:
1. Do not respond to messages with personal information.
2. Do not click on links in text messages, instead log into your service provider account through the official website or app.
3. A bank will never text/email/phone looking for personal information.
4. Contact your bank/service provider/employer directly.
5. Never use contact details from a text message; always independently verify.
6. Always double-check before clicking links or attachments in random or unexpected emails or texts, and never give away security details such as PINs or passwords to anyone.
