Sligo Credit Union Welcomes Drumkeerin Credit Union
Sligo Credit Union welcome members from Drumkeerin Credit Union in Leitrim under a new transfer of engagement.
Drumkeerin Credit Union had been looking for a solution to improve the service for its members for some time. Their approach to Sligo Credit Union was met with open arms and this means that it will become a branch office of Sligo Credit Union, with its members gaining access to a greater range of services - including the newly enhanced online services. The Board of Drumkeerin will continue to provide voluntary input through cashier duty on Saturdays at the current premises in the village.
Drumkeerin Credit Union was a largely voluntary organisation and the Board felt this was restricting the range and access to services it could offer members. It is also becoming increasingly difficult for smaller credit unions to satisfy increasing regulatory requirements.
With 670 members, Drumkeerin Credit Union has been operating for the past 38 years. It has been predominantly a voluntary credit union, providing services to its members on Thursday and Friday evenings.
Under the new merger, Drumkeerin will be open on Saturday mornings from 10:30am to 12:30pm but members will now have the option of doing business during the week at its Stephen Street, Sligo or at the Collooney branch.
Peter Smith, Chairperson of Sligo Credit Union said:
“We were delighted to accept Drumkeerin’s request which we strongly believe is in the best interests of members and in line with the principle of co-operation amongst cooperatives to better serve all our members.
“There has been a Credit Union presence in Drumkeerin since 1980 and it is Sligo Credit Union’s desire that this presence remain. We could not do this without the continued voluntary input from the stakeholders in Drumkeerin and it is a measure of their commitment to the service of their membership that this will continue into the future.”
Seamus Duignan, Chairperson of Drumkeerin Credit Union said:
“Since Drumkeerin Credit Union was founded in 1980, it has played an important part in the financial wellbeing and progress of the Drumkeerin area. In recent years, the board have explored the possibility of a merger with another credit union and have decided to merge with Sligo Credit Union Limited. We will continue to maintain a presence at the current location in the village.
“This is a new beginning for the credit union in Drumkeerin and we would like to thank those who gave their time and effort willingly down through the years and also to the members for their support and encouragement over the years.”
